SYNOPSIS:  Mother & Son is an adaptation of the ABC smash hit comedy series from the 1980’s in which long suffering, single

man Arthur Beare lives at home and cares for his manipulative, aging, “selectively” senile mum, Maggie. The script portrays 3

episodes – the first (The Neighbours) looks at Maggie’s relationship with her ethnic neighbour.  The second (The Boyfriend) concerns

Arthur’s reaction to Maggie having an admirer and the last which I adapted from two episodes (The Deed) deals with Robert coercing

Maggie into a nursing home

SYNOPSIS: Written in 1987, THEY CAME FROM MARS AND LANDED OUTSIDE THE FARNDALE AVENUE CHURCH HALL

IN TIME FOR THE TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD'S COFFEE MORNING (whew!) is seventh in a series of plays created by writers

David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin Jr.--plays which find the ladies of Farnsdale putting on a show. Over the years, the ladies have

taken a crack at everything from Shakespeare to Gilbert & Sullivan; on this occasion its science fiction. But no matter the genre,

you can always count on one thing: the result will be unbearably incompetent.

In this particular scenario, the ladies are performing the story of a Martian who wants to steal the newly invented Roberta the Robot i

n order to learn the secrets of macramé. Trouble is, the actress playing the robot has been accidentally dosed up with a handful of valium,

the lady playing the leading man is stuck in the toilet with the runs, and every one is having a bit of trouble with their lines. All the same,

they make a good effort, even when disrupted by a cast member's decision to present awards for the flower show in the middle of act two.

This is, obviously, comedy of a deliberately wrought "so awful it's funny" variety.

ARTS SHED

BTC committee invited its members and the general public to an "Open Day” of the Arts Shed on Saturday 23rd January to showcase

what has been developed over the past 10 years. Visitors were taken on a tour of the venue and browsed though the facility. They were

overwhelmed to see our well equipped rehearsal/performance space and sets/ costume construction and storage areas. Many were enlightened

and interested to see what is involved behind the scenes to produce a show.

The official opening and unveiling of a plaque by Mayor Rod Campbell was held on Friday 29th January 2010. The Mayor

acknowledged the committees, sponsors and volunteers who had contributed greatly to the development of our Arts Shed over the past ten years.

The evening concluded with entertaining teasers from our two dramas Mother and Son and They Came from Mars……..which will be staged in the

Arts Shed in March and April?

ABOUT BTC “ARTS SHED” DEVELOPMENT

In October 1996 Bendigo Theatre Company (BTC) accepted the invitation from the City of Greater Bendigo to engage in a long term lease on the

old army drill hall in Allingham Street, Golden Square. This Commonwealth property was offered to the City of Greater Bendigo; on the condition

they offset the purchase price by having a local community organisation utilize the property.

After inspection of the site, the committee was thrilled with the potential for development, and the prospect of housing all their property in the

one location. BTC accepted the City of Greater Bendigo’s offer and reimbursed them the cost of the site, $20,000 plus legal fees, and not to

exceed $25,000. At the time of signing the lease, BTC was hiring a number of locations for rehearsals, costumes and properties storage and

storage/construction of sets.

All the above goals have been achieved, and BTC has been able to assist other community organisations and schools with a rehearsal space

which replicates the dimensions of the Capital. BTC continues its long standing policy of giving practical support to other groups in our community.

With an enterprising and dedicated committee the old unlined tin shed with a rough asphalt floor, has been transformed into a well equipped

black box rehearsal/ performance area, with ample storage and construction facilities. This could not have been achieve without the support a

nd cooperation from the City of Greater Bendigo, businesses and the many countless voluntary hours  given by members of our community.

This is an exciting time in the history of Bendigo Theatre Company.  After 58 years of continuous and on going commitment to the arts in our

community, we now have a permanent and secure home. It is with great pride that we now showcase what can be achieved when a community

group work together in a shared project for the betterment of our community.

A place to call home for the Bendigo Theatre Company - ABC Central ...

... having no place of their own, the Bendigo Theatre Company now has their very own, full-featured ... seen a Bendigo Theatre Company production, you'd know ...
